"
Study the past, live in the
present, work toward the future."

George Fredrick Watts
1817-1904
"
Every Child is an artist.
The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

Pablo Picasso
1881-1973

The above quotation by Picasso points to one of the great challenges instructors face when they teach art to children. Independent studies have found that as early as age twelve many young artists abandon their goals because they feel untalented and self-conscious about the work they produce. Often this problem is due to a lack of technical training. American painter Eric Fischl (1948- ) commented on this very point: "Part of the problem is that artists of my generation were not educated. We were not given the equipment because it was generally believed to be irrelevant. Drawing, eye-hand coordination, art history - really fundamental stuff was considered unnecessary."

At The Art Academy we take this challenge seriously. We've structured our programs to teach sound technical skills balanced with creative exercises that promote a true understanding of the basic principles of art. Our goal is excellence in children's art education. We firmly believe that all children, excluding severe emotional or physical challenges, and given the right amount of time, encouragement and proper instruction, have a natural ability to draw and paint well.

At The Art Academy we strive to improve students' drawing and painting abilities in a positive, non-competitive environment. Our instructors work with children individually to help them unlock their hidden talents. Students learn at their own pace as they draw and paint subject matter that is interesting to them.

Our classes are sequential, each one building upon the last. As children advance through our programs they are continually challenged with new assignments that take them to new levels of understanding. We offer classes year round in Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter quarters so students can improve quickly. That way parents and children can see significant results in just a few years.

Because of the vast amount of outside commitments kids have in their lives today we do not give homework. Instead, we simply ask that children try their best when they come to class. At The Art Academy we stress practice and effort over talent. We believe that if students put forth their best efforts during each class their abilities will dramatically improve, unlocking artistic potential they never knew existed.

The Art Academy is nondenominational and nondiscriminatory. Our classroom rules are designed to promote a positive atmosphere in which children have respect for themselves, fellow students, and their instructors. By following these simple guidelines a safe, fun workplace is ensured where students can relax and enjoy the learning process.

In addition to our extensive children’s program we also offer a program for adults. These classes are designed to take beginning to advanced adult students to new levels of proficiency by increasing artistic knowledge, craftsmanship and creativity. For a description of that program and additional adult offerings, please visit our Adult Classes web page.
