SARAH KLEIN began teaching at The Art Academy at age 15. Now in her 20’s, Sarah has become an indispensable member of our staff. Sarah’s artistic skills, which were developed in our Fundamentals Program throughout her teen years, have come to fruition at the University of Minnesota. There, as a theater arts major with an emphasis in theater tech, Sarah has directed her talents toward costume, scenic, and lighting design. Her work has appeared in productions at the U of M theater and opera shows, as well as at the Beloit College Theater, Parks Square Theatre, Macalister Scottish Country Fair, and the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.

“I love working at The Art Academy and I love teaching kids,” says Sarah. “There’s a sense of higher purpose here, that you’re really making a difference by changing young lives. Children have a unique and uncluttered view of the world. It’s that freedom that makes them so fun to be with. Because they’re unencumbered they learn quickly, absorbing each lesson like an empty sponge soaking up water.

“Dealing with these kids has improved my own life, too. By having to boil concepts of drawing and painting down to their most basic elements for teaching purposes I am able to improve my work and advance my seeing. I credit many of my personal achievements to these wonderful students.

“Finally, I’ve learned a valuable lesson about talent and effort. So many children come to us who can’t draw that well but have a desire to learn. They work at it, and their confidence builds. Soon they’re surprising everyone with the projects that they’re taking home, and the confidence that has been growing in class begins to spread into other areas of their lives. In my conversations with them they share that confidence and tell me about all the risks that they’re starting to take outside of school. It’s a wonderful feeling, to know that you've touched children in such a positive way.”
